Accessibility Trail Assessments

There are 1,400 miles of trails in Tennessee State Parks, offering a range of difficulty levels to ensure individuals of all abilities can enjoy them. To help visitors choose the right trail, we use a specialized accessibility trail assessment tool. This tool collects detailed and accurate data on each trail over the next few years.

The technology is called High-Efficiency Trail Assessment Process (HETAP) which expedites the assessment. It allows one individual to collect trail and feature data at an average of one mile per hour. This data will help hikers choose the right trail for their abilities or skill level and will also identify which are accessible to trail-ready wheelchairs.
