Why Building and Maintaining Tennessee Trails Matters

You have felt it before. The moment a trail opens to a waterfall, a canyon, or a quiet forest overlook. These experiences do not happen by accident. They exist because Tennessee trails are carefully built, maintained, and protected by skilled trailbuilders and dedicated supporters.

Not every path is easy to find. Some wind through deep gorges, beside roaring waterfalls, or beneath Tennessee’s wild canopy. The Tennessee State Parks Conservancy is on a mission to protect these places and ensure Tennessee State Parks trails remain safe, sustainable, and accessible for generations.

Tennessee Trails Connect Us to Nature and History

Tennessee hiking trails do more than lead to beautiful views. They connect us to the land’s history and to each other. From shaded woodland paths to rugged canyon routes, trails make exploration possible.

At Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Area, more than 3,000 acres of forest, sandstone cliffs, and towering bluffs tell a larger story. As a tributary of the Wolf River, Pogue Creek connects Tennessee’s landscapes and waterways. Located on the northern Cumberland Plateau and linked to Pickett CCC Memorial State Park, this hidden gem relies on well-built, well-maintained trails.

Building Sustainable Trails Requires Skilled Trailbuilders

Strong trails begin with expert planning and design. In 2025, Tennessee State Parks staff attended the Master Trail Building Course, a four-day, 30-hour program focused on sustainable trail construction.

This training equips staff to plan, build, and repair trails that withstand erosion, heavy use, and severe weather. By joining the Trail Pack, supporters help fund essential trailbuilder training like this that protects Tennessee’s trails in the long term.

The Tennessee State Parks Conservancy is also a proud recipient of the 2025 AllTrails Stewards Fund, reinforcing its commitment to trail stewardship across the state.

Trail Maintenance Keeps Trails Safe and Accessible

Tennessee State Parks boasts more than 1,300 miles of trails. These trails require constant care. Erosion, flooding, fallen trees, and heavy foot traffic can quickly make trails unsafe.

When Hurricane Helene tore through Tennessee in September 2024, the damage was extensive. At Roan Mountain State Park, flooding and high winds devastated the Bearwallow Loop Trail. Massive fallen trees and upturned roots still block sections of the trail, limiting safe access for hikers.

Trail Pack support helps clear debris, restore damaged trails, and protect access to places people love.

Trails Lead to Tennessee’s Most Iconic Waterfalls

Tennessee State Parks are home to over 80 waterfalls. From breathtaking Fall Creek Falls State Park, the tallest single-drop waterfall east of the Mississippi River, to hidden cascades at Rock Island State Park, these hikes are part of Tennessee’s natural heritage.

Without trail maintenance and repair, access to these iconic destinations would disappear.

Trail Pack Support Improves Visitor Experiences

At House Mountain State Natural Area, Trail Pack support has enhanced trail access, safety, and the overall visitor experience. Hikers now enjoy clearer paths, safer climbs, and sweeping views from 2,100 feet above the surrounding landscape.

Whether you prefer a lakeside stroll, a shaded woodland trail, or a challenging climb, every trail needs care.
