Why We Love Running in Nature

Tennessee State Parks Conservancy Board Chair Supporting Run for the Trees, the Bob Ross 5K

Running in nature offers more than physical benefits; it reconnects us with the natural world. The biophilia hypothesis suggests humans have an innate desire to connect with nature, and trail running satisfies this urge. Unlike treadmill workouts, trail running engages our senses with the sounds of birds, rustling leaves, and the scent of flowers, trees, and nature.

Mental Health Benefits

Running in natural settings reduces stress, anxiety, and depression. Studies show that “green exercise” enhances mood and cognitive function. The combination of physical activity and nature exposure leads to improved mental well-being.

Physical Advantages

Trail running challenges the body differently than road running. Uneven terrain improves balance and engages various muscle groups. The softer surfaces of trails are gentler on joints, reducing injury risk.

Running for a Cause: The Bob Ross Run for the Trees

The Bob Ross Run for the Trees is a virtual 5K supporting tree planting and forest conservation. Inspired by Bob Ross’s love for nature, participants run or walk to contribute to reforestation efforts. This event combines fitness with environmental stewardship. For the first time, Tennessee State Parks Conservancy joined the initiative for Tennessee.

Learn more about the captivating initiative by listening to The Bob Ross Run For The Trees podcast, featuring the Conservancy’s Board Chair, Cathy Cate (hint, Cathy begins at 6:45).

Tennessee State Parks Conservancy is Committed to Protecting and Preserving State Parks for Future Generations

Tennessee is one of the most biodiverse states in the country, home to a vibrant tree population. Launching the Run for the Trees 5K felt like a natural fit for our mission to protect and preserve these vital resources. Even if you missed this year’s Happy Little 5K, we hope you’ll continue to run in nature and experience its many benefits—physical, mental, and spiritual.

Nature heals, inspires, and connects us, and every step you take helps raise awareness for conservation. Make plans to join us next year and be part of something that makes a lasting impact for Tennessee’s trees and trails. Sign up for our e-Newsletter or follow us on socials to stay up-to-date on our next Run for the Trees.
